COVID-19: A World Pandemic – Are You Practicing Social Distancing?

We are certain that most of you are aware about the pandemic by now that we are busy fighting all over world. The virus called COVID-19, also known as the Corona Virus, has led to, all live sport and entertainment events being cancelled or postponed, including the Olympic Games. Movie releases have been postponed and most people are working from home.

Did you miss public health officials are asking to practice "social distancing?" Maybe you are unsure what it means. We are sure a lot of people immediately thought, "What does social distancing even mean?" — we've got you covered.

What Is Social Distancing?

Many people were disappointed to hear that so many sports events, cruises, festivals and other gatherings are being cancelled, but the reality is, there is a public health reason for these measures. Cancellations like this, will help stop the virus from spreading and doing even more damage to the world population.

Even though many people experience only a mild illness when infected with the new coronavirus, there are a lot of people that don't. If you are keeping an eye on the news, you will see that a lot of people are actually dying of this. That’s why preventive measures like social distancing will help protect vulnerable people from developing more serious illness.

Here Are A Few Examples Of Effective Social Distancing:

  • Work from home instead, avoid the office
  • Closing schools or switching to online classes
  • Visit your loved ones by electronic devices instead of in person
  • Cancel or postpone conferences and large meetings

If you are concerned that you may have COVID-19, it’s important to follow the right steps to help protect your health and the health of others.

Self-Quarantine

All over the world, people who have been exposed to the new coronavirus and who are at risk for coming down with COVID-19 must practice self-quarantine. This is one of the first steps health experts recommend. Self-quarantine should last at least 14 days. Living in a dorm-room or sharing a room with a sibling, can make it difficult to self-quarantine. Something that can really help you in a situation like this, is a bed tent. What does Self-Quarantine Involve?

  • Using standard hygiene and washing hands frequently
  • Not sharing things like towels and utensils
  • Staying at home
  • Not having visitors
  • Staying at least 6 feet away from other people in your household

What Does “Flattening The Curve” Mean?

Flattening the curve means slowing the rate of COVID-19 infection so hospitals have room, supplies and doctors for all of the patients who need care. This is something governments all over the world are trying to achieve.

A lot of people becoming very sick over the course of a few days could overwhelm hospitals or care facilities. Too many people becoming severely ill with COVID-19 at roughly the same time could result in a shortage of hospital beds, equipment or doctors.

This pandemic does seem overwhelming, but in truth, every person can help slow down the spread of COVID-19. If everyone stands together and does their part, we can make a big difference to our health, and that of others around us. Our health is in each other’s hands.
